Here’s a situation most working adults in Adelaide will recognise. You get a reminder that your dental check-up is overdue. You go to book, and the available slots are 9am, 10:30am, or 2pm on a Wednesday. To make any of those work, you need to take a half-day off work, rearrange school pickup, or convince your manager that a dental appointment counts as a good enough reason to disappear at lunchtime.
So you close the browser and tell yourself you’ll deal with it next month.
Repeat for twelve months. Now you’ve missed two check-ups, that small cavity has grown, and you’re dealing with something that takes significantly more time to fix than a routine check would have.
This is one of the most common ways dental problems escalate — not neglect, just inaccessibility.
The 5pm Problem
The overwhelming majority of dental practices in Adelaide’s northern suburbs — and across Adelaide generally — operate standard business hours. They open sometime between 8am and 9am and close between 5pm and 5:30pm. Some close early on Fridays.
If you work a standard job, those are the exact hours you’re unavailable.
There’s a handful of practices open on Saturday mornings. Those appointments fill up fast, and weekend slots often attract surcharges.
The result is that routine dental care — the kind that prevents problems from becoming serious — keeps getting deprioritised because the logistics of getting there are too inconvenient to arrange.
Why Smile Spot Is Open Until 7pm
When I set up Smile Spot Mawson Lakes at 1/3 Coventry Street, this was one of the problems I specifically wanted to solve for our community. The Mawson Lakes area is full of working professionals, university students, families with school-aged children, and shift workers. Very few of those people can easily make a 10am appointment on a Tuesday.
We’re open Monday to Thursday until 7pm so that a 5:30pm or 6pm appointment is genuinely available. You finish work, pick up the kids if you need to, and come in. You’re home in time for dinner.
It sounds simple, but it’s still relatively rare for a dental practice in Adelaide’s northern suburbs to operate this way.
Who Benefits Most from Evening Appointments
Working professionals from the Mawson Lakes corridor. Many residents commute to the CBD or work within the Mawson Lakes technology and business precinct. Getting to a dentist between 9am and 5pm means taking time off. An evening slot doesn’t.
UniSA Mawson Lakes students. The campus is essentially next door to us. Students often have packed daytime schedules of lectures, labs, and tutorials. A late afternoon or evening appointment fits around study rather than competing with it.
Parents from Parafield Gardens, Salisbury, and Brahma Lodge. School drop-off and pickup, childcare logistics, after-school activities — the afternoon coordination required for a school-aged family is already full. An evening appointment means you can bring your child (or come yourself) after everything else is sorted.
Shift workers from the Edinburgh RAAF base and Parafield Airport precinct. Shift rosters don’t align with standard dental hours. Evening appointments at least cover some of the gaps.
Anyone who finds it difficult to take time off. This includes casual workers, hospitality staff, small business owners who can’t easily step away, and anyone on a tight budget where a half-day off work means real financial impact.
Three Dentists Means More Slots
One of the practical advantages of having three dentists — Dr Sunny, Dr Alissa Kim, and Dr Louise Chen — is that we have three appointment books running. That means more evening slots available each day, not just one or two. If your preferred time is taken with one dentist, there’s a good chance another has an opening.
It also means that in an emergency, there’s a greater likelihood we can get you seen the same day, even during busy periods.
What Evening Appointments Cover
Evening appointments at Smile Spot are full appointments — not a reduced-service after-hours offering. You can book routine check-ups and cleans, fillings, dental X-rays, consultations, emergency appointments, and most other services at any time during our open hours.
The only thing that changes when you book at 6pm versus 10am is the time on the calendar. Everything else is the same.
