It's not as scary as you've heard

Root canal treatment has a reputation that's much worse than the reality. With modern techniques and local anaesthetic, most patients find the procedure no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. The goal is to relieve your pain — not cause it.

If you've been told you need a root canal, or if you're experiencing significant tooth pain, swelling, or sensitivity, contact us. The sooner we can assess and treat the issue, the better the outcome for your tooth.

What is root canal treatment?

Inside each tooth is a space called the root canal, which contains the pulp — the soft tissue that includes nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria enter this space (usually through deep decay or a crack), the pulp can become infected or inflamed, causing significant pain.

Root canal treatment removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canal, and seals it to prevent reinfection. This allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than having it removed.

When is root canal treatment needed?

  • Severe toothache that doesn't go away, especially when biting or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, even after the source is removed
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the affected tooth
  • A visible pimple or bump on the gums (a sign of abscess)
  • Deep decay or a large cavity that has reached the pulp

What to expect during treatment

Your dentist will begin by thoroughly numbing the area with local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the root canals. The infected pulp is carefully removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped, then filled and sealed.

Treatment may be completed in one or two visits depending on the complexity. After the root canal, a crown is usually recommended to protect the tooth and restore its full function.

Aftercare

Some tenderness in the days following treatment is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Avoid hard or chewy foods on the treated tooth until your crown is placed. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.

With proper care and a crown to protect it, a tooth that has had root canal treatment can serve you well for many years. Your dentist will advise you on the best way to maintain it.
