What to expect at your filling appointment

The cavity is then cleaned and conditioned to help the composite resin bond firmly to the tooth. We apply the resin in small increments, carefully shaping and sculpting each layer before setting it with a curing light. This layering technique produces a stronger, more natural-looking result than placing the material all at once.

Once the filling is shaped and contoured, we check your bite to ensure the filling is not sitting too high and causing uneven pressure when you close your teeth together. After your appointment, avoid very hot or cold food and drinks for a few hours while the tooth settles. Some mild sensitivity over the first day or two is normal, particularly to temperature changes. Over time, fillings can wear, chip, or develop gaps at the margins where the filling meets the tooth.
