Dental care for those who served

The Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) provides dental coverage for eligible veterans and serving members of the Australian Defence Force. At Smile Spot Mawson Lakes, we are a registered DVA dental provider and treat veterans from across Adelaide's northern suburbs — Mawson Lakes, Salisbury, Parafield Gardens, Para Hills, Elizabeth, and surrounding areas.

We understand that navigating DVA entitlements can be confusing. That is why we take care of the administrative side for you. When you visit us with your DVA card, we verify your eligibility, submit treatment plans for prior approval where required, and bill DVA directly for covered treatments. You pay nothing out of pocket for services that fall within your entitlement.

What your DVA card covers

Gold Card

DVA Gold Card holders are entitled to all clinically necessary dental treatment, including:

  • Check-ups, examinations, and dental X-rays
  • Scale and clean (professional teeth cleaning)
  • Fillings and tooth-coloured restorations
  • Root canal treatment
  • Tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth
  • Crowns, bridges, and dentures (with prior approval)
  • Dental implants (with prior approval, where clinically justified)
  • Emergency dental treatment

White Card

DVA White Card holders are covered for dental treatment that is related to their accepted service-related conditions. If you are unsure whether your dental needs fall within your White Card entitlement, we can help you determine this at your appointment.

How DVA dental works at Smile Spot

Step 1 — Bring your card

When you book your appointment, let us know you are a DVA patient. Bring your DVA Gold or White Card to your first visit. We will verify your details and confirm your eligibility before any treatment begins.

Step 2 — We handle the paperwork

For routine treatments like check-ups, fillings, and simple extractions, no prior approval is needed — we bill DVA directly after your appointment. For major work such as crowns, dentures, or implants, we prepare and submit the treatment plan to DVA on your behalf. We follow up on the approval and let you know the outcome.

Step 3 — Treatment with no gap

Once approved, we carry out the treatment and bill DVA directly. There is no out-of-pocket cost for covered services. If any part of your treatment is not covered, we discuss this with you upfront so you can make an informed decision.

Serving Adelaide's veteran community

Adelaide's northern suburbs are home to a significant veteran and Defence Force community. Whether you are a retired veteran living in Mawson Lakes or Salisbury, a current ADF member based at Edinburgh RAAF Base, or a reservist in the surrounding suburbs, Smile Spot is here for you.

We also provide evening appointments Monday to Thursday until 7pm, making it easier to attend without disrupting your day. All three of our dentists — Dr Sunny, Dr Alissa, and Dr Louise — are experienced in treating DVA patients and will ensure you receive thorough, unhurried care in a comfortable environment.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What DVA cards does Smile Spot accept?

We accept both DVA Gold Cards and DVA White Cards. Gold Card holders are entitled to all clinically necessary dental treatment at no cost. White Card holders are covered for dental treatment related to their accepted conditions. We will check your eligibility and entitlements before treatment begins so there are no surprises.

Do I need a referral or prior approval for DVA dental?

Most routine dental treatments — check-ups, fillings, simple extractions — do not require prior approval and can be bulk billed directly. More complex treatments such as crowns, bridges, dentures, implants, and oral surgery require DVA prior approval before we can proceed. We handle the entire approval process for you, including submitting the treatment plan to DVA and following up on the outcome.

Will I have any out-of-pocket costs?

For treatments covered under your DVA entitlement, there are no out-of-pocket costs — we bulk bill DVA directly. If you request a treatment that falls outside your DVA coverage, we will discuss the cost with you beforehand. We will never proceed with treatment that has a gap without your informed consent.

What dental treatments are covered by DVA?

DVA dental coverage is comprehensive for Gold Card holders. It includes check-ups, X-rays, fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, dentures, crowns, bridges, and in many cases dental implants (with prior approval). Cosmetic treatments that are not clinically necessary are generally not covered. We will advise you clearly on what is and is not covered for your specific card type.

Can I book an evening appointment for DVA dental?

Yes. We are open Monday to Thursday until 7pm, which means you can attend appointments after work or during hours that suit your schedule. DVA dental appointments are available during all our regular opening hours, including evenings.
